Class Placement & Level Guide
At Legacy Studio, class placement is based on a dancer’s individual technical development, strength, coordination, flexibility, movement quality, focus, and ability to retain choreography. While age guidelines are provided to help families select appropriate classes, age is not the sole factor used for placement. Dancers may be recommended for classes above or below their age group based on experience, technical readiness, and instructor evaluation to ensure the best learning environment and growth for each student.
Pre-Dance
Designed for dancers beginning movement exploration and classroom structure. Focuses on listening skills, coordination, musicality, balance, rhythm, and basic motor development in a fun and encouraging environment.
Beginner
For dancers developing foundational technique and classroom confidence. Dancers are learning basic terminology, body placement, flexibility, rhythm, coordination, and simple movement combinations across the floor and center. Beginner classes are open to dancers at any age and may also be appropriate for dancers who have previous dance experience but still need additional time to strengthen technical skills, control, flexibility, retention, and movement foundations in a supportive, slower-paced environment.
Beginner/Intermediate
For dancers who demonstrate strong foundational skills and are ready for more detailed technique and movement quality. Dancers begin learning increased control, stronger retention, flexibility, performance quality, and more complex combinations while continuing to strengthen core technical foundations.
Intermediate
For dancers with consistent technical understanding, movement retention, and classroom discipline. Dancers are expected to apply corrections, demonstrate strength and flexibility, execute combinations with confidence, and show performance maturity.
Intermediate/Advanced
For dancers showing advanced technical progress, strong work ethic, and refined movement quality. Classes move at a faster pace and require strong retention, control, flexibility, turns, leaps, musicality, and performance ability.
Advanced
For highly dedicated dancers with strong technical training and performance experience. Dancers are expected to demonstrate excellent technique, artistry, flexibility, strength, musicality, and the ability to quickly learn and execute advanced choreography.
Pointe & Pre-Pointe
Placement is based on ballet technique, strength, alignment, ankle stability, and instructor evaluation — not age alone. These classes require teacher approval and are designed for dancers who demonstrate proper readiness for pointe training.
Invitation Only / Stars Competition Team
These rehearsals and classes are reserved for dancers who demonstrate exceptional commitment, technique, work ethic, attendance, and performance ability. Placement is determined by instructor invitation and studio evaluation. These dancers are on our competition team.
The Legacy Dance Studio classes are rooted in ballet, providing a strong foundation for students to explore various dance styles as they grow and develop. Weekly classes build the skills and dedication needed to pursue dance in the Port Orange area.
To encourage exploration, beginner dancers now start earlier with a variety of styles, including tap, jazz, and hip hop, in addition to ballet, creative movement, and stretching. This approach introduces students to diverse techniques while still emphasizing the importance of a strong foundation. As they advance, dancers continue to expand their skills in contemporary, advanced jazz, and more.
We're also excited to offer new classes this season, including specialized workshops and technique-focused sessions designed to challenge and inspire dancers of all levels.
The Legacy Dance Season runs from August through June, culminating in our Annual Showcase, where students showcase their growth and talent on stage.
