Ballet requires a large amount of strength exercises for legs, calves, core, and glutes. These ballet exercises are building the same muscles and stretches that the body uses to dance in most styles of dance – especially jazz and contemporary styles. Strengthening will also be used in other styles of dance, however, ballet focuses on the feet, legs, hips, and core strength. These strength building exercises help dancers to gain more control of their bodies and alignment in their muscles and spine.
Most terminology in general dance class is based off ballet terms, which are in the French language. The most utilized ballet terms are used in jazz and contemporary dance classes. Many of the vocabulary used in contemporary dance class is based off ballet and a mix of modern dance and jazz dance classes. The warmups are built on many of the same exercises we use in ballet class and other dance classes offered. Modern dance and jazz dance are branches created from ballet. Dancers wanted more creative ways to move and wanted to break the stringent rules of ballet. This offset didn’t completely diminish ballet technique, but it laid the groundwork for the “newer” styles of dance.
Taking ballet class and adding jazz and contemporary dance classes will help to build a foundation off repetition. Learning how to use the basics of ballet like plies, tendus and battements – which are all from ballet barre. Those exercises are utilized in the center for jazz and contemporary classes and even sometimes used in across the floor progressions during dance class.
When learning to dance, gaining flexibility is a very important aspect for dance class. Ballet technique requires a large amount flexibility and a broad range of motion in spine and legs. Many of the dance steps and technical elements of ballet can cause injury if a dancer is not flexible enough. Specifically in the hips and ankles. Every ballet dancer’s goal is to work toward pointe shoes. Dancing en pointe is the highest level of ballet and requires specific amount of training and rye age of the dancer.
Working at the ballet barre helps dancers to gain the connection steps smoothly. Transitional dance steps can be harder in the center when trying to gain balance when balancing in releve or one foot. The use of our feet and working through our plie positions also help to smooth out transitions that can improve technique in other styles as well.
All styles of dance are unique in their own way and bring so much technique and expression to the table.
